A LEGO Los Angeles City Hall that is small yet towers tall 2019-05-15 21:00:07

Bruce Lowell is a native of Los Angeles, which is one of the reasons he built this 1:200 scale LEGO model of Los Angeles City Hall. For Bruce, the model was a labor of love, having gone through multiple iterations since 2014. The finished product is richly detailed with architectural embellishments, a brick-built flag draped down the right side of the building, and dozens of tiny trees. Everything looks beautiful, and this is further enhanced by the natural background used in Bruce’s photography. In fact, I think it would make for a picture-perfect postcard.

When the sun sets, the lights turn on. Currently, there are only lights for the tower and red warning light, but Bruce plans on adding lighting within the rest of the building. He would also like to light up the street lamps and add spotlights to highlight City Hall’s exterior. I’m eager to see what the model looks like when fully lit.

LEGO Los Angeles City Hall

You really have to view the model from all angles to gain an appreciation for the level of detail. For example, an overhead view highlights City Hall’s courtyards and the nearby park.

Another great example is this street level view of the tower. While it may be a micro-build, the right type of photography can make you feel like you could explore the grounds and feel so small.

The elegant entrance is decorated with several tiny American flags, along with the flag representing U.S. military prisoners of war and those missing in action. Bruce designed the flag and had it custom-printed by EclipseGrafx.

You can even find some vehicles, like this cute TV news van. It seems like no expense has been spared when it comes to attention to detail.

And here’s the man of the hour, Bruce Lowell, preparing LEGO Los Angeles City Hall for some excellent outdoor photography! If you would like to learn more about the inspiration behind the model, its development and more, you can read more on Bruce Lowell’s personal website.

Airship! Airship! Airship! 2019-05-15 09:00:52

I’m a big fan of finding new ways of integrating large LEGO pieces creatively. Peter Ilmrud does this adeptly in his Steampunk Airship. His skill with smaller LEGO pieces cannot be overlooked (for example the smoke billowing out of the top), and this would be a fantastic creation even if it didn’t have an abundance of large elements, but it’s those big pieces that make you say “oh cool, I haven’t seen one of those used like that before” or, if you’re steeped in the LEGO fan lexicon, “NPU” (Nice Part Use).

Steampunk Airship

Let’s dive in and examine some of the parts used nicely here. The obvious examples are the planets – Bespin specifically – used for the balloons. Another easily noticeable piece is the dragon head fittingly used as a figure head. Further examination reveals well-integrated use of a Ninjago Airjitzu propeller, hero factory blades, and 4 Juniors boat bows used to support the wing propellers. The final example of great parts use I’d like to point out are the inside-out tires used in the the smokestack. Take a look at the images of different angles Peter’s posted and see what other cool building techniques he’s used on his airship.

LEGO has been having some fun with their designer videos recently, and this gem for the newly announced LEGO Stranger Things set 75810 The Upside Down turns the boombox’s awesome level up a notch. LEGO Designer Justin Ramsden (also part of the team of designers who bought us the gigantic Hogwarts Castle) flips the set over and over showcasing the strength of the build, while also rocking some amazing puns in this video designed to look like a long-lost interview recorded on VHS in the 1980s.

LEGO Stranger Things 75810 The Upside Down comes with 2,287 pieces (read our full review here) and will retail for US $199.99 | CAN $269.99 | UK £179.99. It is available beginning tomorrow for LEGO VIP members, with a full release coming June 1.

LEGO reveals new set from Netflix’s Stranger Things: 75810 The Upside Down [News] 2019-05-15 02:30:19

Things are getting stranger. LEGO has revealed a brand new large and unique set 75810 The Upside Down based on Netflix’s original series Stranger Things. The set features the main Byers’ home from the series complete with 1980 Chevrolet Blazer, along with the darker reverse “Upside-Down” dimension beneath it.

The set comes with 2,287 pieces and eight minifigures including Eleven, Mike Wheeler, Lucas Sinclair, Dustin Henderson, Will Byers, Joyce Byers, Chief Jim Hopper and the Demogorgon. The set is available starting tomorrow for LEGO VIPs for US $199.99 | CAN $269.99 | UK £179.99 with general availability beginning June 1st. (We’ve already gotten a hands-on look at this stunner of a set, so make sure to check out our review too.)

Stranger Things is certainly an unexpected partnership for LEGO, especially with the series’ focus on horror. But the company is diving headfirst into 80s nostalgia and delivering perhaps one of the most unique sets of recent memory.  The box can be displayed right-side up or upside down with logos on each end.

The set comes with the house with detailed interior, a police cruiser, the alternate dimension upside down house as well as the minifigures of the main cast. The double-sided home measures over a foot tall (32cm) and 17 inches wide (44cm) and features a more subdued, earth tone color palette.

The main play feature of the set is that it can be rotated 180 degrees, resting on the tops of two sturdy trees at each end. This way, the alternate dimension version of the home can be displayed in full.

The Upside Down features black vines, a dilapidated appearance, dark coloring and the series main monster, the Demogorgon. This side of the house is virtually dripping with oozy detail, and is secured to its right-side up counterpart using a few well-placed ball joints.

The interior of the Byers’ house features Will’s bedroom, the living room and the dining room, along with the front porch.  The living room has the famous light-up alphabet wall (complete with a light brick), a couch, stickered flyers and even a bear trap. Will’s bedroom includes a boombox, bed, desk, drawings and movie posters. The attic space also includes a Mind Flayer drawing and a wizard hat for ‘Will the Wise’.

In the Upside Down, the house is mirrored perfectly, but in a darker, run-down and overgrown state–an environment perfect for a few jump-scares.

In addition to the house, Chief Jim Hopper’s police truck is included that features a removable roof and a new pumpkin element stashed in the back.

The set comes with eight minifigures and a display stand. In this first photo we see fellow Dungeon and Dragons players Mike Wheeler, Lucas Sinclair and Dustin Henderson, with several new hair-piece elements and colors. Eleven is also shown with a blonde removable wig and a waffle.

Rounding out the set we have a spot-on Will Byers being pursued by the Demogorgon (with a printed minifigure head with closed petals) , Chief Jim Hopper and Joyce Byers.

Overall, The Upside Down looks like a fascinating set, regardless of the scary source material. Perhaps it will lead to other possibilities within Netfilx’s vast entertainment library, but for now this Stranger Things standalone set is a welcome addition for adult fans of LEGO. Make sure you check out our hands-on review of this 2,287-piece set. which is available starting tomorrow for LEGO VIPs for US $199.99 | CAN $269.99 | UK £179.99.
