The Williams launch showcases why these 3D render presentations are bad and useless 2019-02-11 18:22:21

I could write odes about the preference of traditional presentations, but this goes beyond preference.

I watched the rendered promo video and noticed, that there is no wastegate exhaust. So there are 2 options: either there is no wastegate exhaust at the expected place or the rendered model is bad/incorrect. Given that the first option is legally impossible, we know that the animation is bad.

It might not be that big of a problem for those who only care about how the car looks overall (so mainly livery and extremely out-of-ordinary solutions), but for those who want to get into the details, it's really annoying. If this mistake could slip through, then how could we be certain about the other parts being correct?

Oh! There is a real car launch show you say? That's good! We will get real photos then! Nevermind. Williams decided that the car can only be viewed from a single angle. Photographers can't walk around it and Williams didn't release showroom photos either. All we have are questionable renders and photos from a single angle (which shows quite a lot of course, but not nearly enough).

At this point I don't even care about traditional launch events or live streams. All I want is a proper way to take a look at the REAL cars. Just 4-5 photos from different angles. It shouldn't be too much to ask for.

Question: why do the top teams do multiple q1 and q2 runs during qualifying? 2019-02-11 17:25:25

Assuming its a dry qualifying session, I would assume that the position for q3 would normally be secured after one run. Why do red bull, Ferrari and Mercedes go out for multiple runs during the first two qualifying sessions when its pretty clear theyll continue into q3?

What is going on with these title sponsors? 2019-02-11 17:25:21

So I’ve been out of the loop a bit but just had the chance to check out the Haas and the new Williams and am I missing something or are these title sponsors a joke? I mean are they even legitimate businesses? I worry for the future of the sport to be honest. These are not blue chip sponsors. I can’t find anything about this Rich Energy and their social media numbers are clearly bumped by buying followers. Only two profiles on LinkedIn say they work for Rich Energy. Has anyone ever seen a Rich Energy drink in person? Is this some very niche British think that has no retailers outside the UK but somehow is a title sponsor for a global racing organization? And this Rokit company is sketch as hell too. Is it the phone brand or the streetwear brand? Both Rich Energy and Rokit get about 40 likes on their Facebook posts. Is that what it takes to sponsor an F1 team?

Anyone want to set up a shell LLC and make a Facebook page and buy 40,00 followers so we can launder money and sponsor an F1 team? This honestly screams scams, fraud, and Fyre Festival shit all over it. It’s embarrassing for the sport. I hope Liberty Media didn’t have this in mind when they said they wanted more sponsors.

I used to be proud to show people F1 cars and now I’m supposed to show this shitbox Williams with Rokit and MS paint and a halo to someone who doesn’t watch F1? Ha!

Unpopular Opinion: I think F1 should welcome Cannabis, Alcohol, Tobacco and Gambling sponsorship. 2019-02-11 16:14:37

I think with the amount of public knowledge of safety risks, F1 should welcome the sponsorship with a focus on the adult audience. Gone are the days of a camel selling smokes to a kid. As long as the advertising is done responsibly with the obvious dangers exposed (similar to Heineken's don't DUI campaign) I think it should be welcomed in the sport.

Of course the advertising would only be done in areas where its legal.

How can I work in F1 as an engineer? 2019-02-11 14:13:43

This is something i have asked myself for years, because of reasons, one is the pure curiosity of it and the second is a seek of advice for my career.

I am a 18 Y.O.(born in february 2001) student in Spain. This june I´ll have finished the course that we do here before university, and about that, if i stay in Spain, I´d study mechanical engineering, and as i said my dream is to get to work at a F1 team as an engineer, at the racetracks or in the Factory.

Moving abroad is not a problem for me, and some people i´ve known, told me about different courses and degrees available in the UK, which are closely related to motorsports or F1. It would be awesome if any of you could advice me, I´m intersted in almost every high-profile job related to F1 or motorsports.

It´s my first time posting on Reddit , if I violate any comunity guideline, mods let me know. TY.

F1 Crazy Ideas: the Adaptive Pit Speed Limit 2019-02-11 12:14:49

This is either a topic for a serious discussion or an absolute shitpost. You decide.

Introducing the Adaptive Pit Speed Limit (APSL):

Motivation: Help solve the issue of all teams doing the same strategy - the one-stop.

Basic idea: Double the pit speed limit whenever it's safe to do so.

This whole post is under two assumptions:

  • the assumption of efficient communication between automatic detection points, car telemetry and in-car software regulating the pit speed, but given the communication tech teams already have, I don't see this as that much of an issue.

  • the pit speed limit right now is 80kph. I believe it is lowered in some races, but the whole thing works very similarly for any speed limit.

Rule details:

I've always thought it was a bit sad to watch cars in the pit lane crawling along all alone at barely highway speeds. Seems so unnecessary, and while the pit stop itself is really exciting to watch, it seemed wrong to lose 20s+ for a thing that teams were able to push close to or even below 2s. That's when I thought - why can't they go faster?

The obvious answer is safety. But to me, there is little to no safety issue when there is only one car in the pit lane. Most or all mechanics are inside their garages, and no other car is merging in or out of the fast pit lane.

So APSL v1.0 was born, and the rule would have been very simple:

APSL v1.0:

  • a) Whenever a car is alone in the pit lane, it's pit speed limit is 160kph.
  • b) The pit speed limit of cars in any other situation is 80kph
  • (c) race officials can lower the pit speed limit to 80kph or close the pit lane entirely due to safety incidents)

But this brings a challenge with it - what happens when a second car enters the pit lane? Does the speed limit drop instantly? That's not practical. One way to solve this is to install a detection line about 2 seconds before the actual pit entry line. Once a second car crosses the detection line, the car already in the pit lane gets a warning to reduce speed to 80kph in 2 seconds. The other car also gets an immediate warning that it won't be alone and it's pit limiter will be set to 80kph, which it should have plenty of time to slow down appropriately. (Not entirely sure 2s is the appropriate interval, seems like they should be able to do that. If I'm overestimating the reaction and deceleration ability of F1 cars and drivers this can be increased)

There is one other issue with this - what if a car is already exiting the pit lane when another enters it? Does that mean the first car has to slow down on the exit? What if a car is less than 2s (about 89m at 160kph) from the exit line - does it then not slow down at all? And how about 2.1s (~93m)? Does it have to slow down for that 0.1s? And how would the drivers judge how far they are from the pit exit lane? Not practical either. So here comes the expanded rule:

APSL v2.0:

  • a) Whenever a car is alone in the pit lane, it's pit speed limit is 160kph.
  • b) Whenever a car is exiting the pit lane (in the fast lane past it's pit box), and no cars are ahead of it, it's speed limit is 160kph
  • c) The pit speed limit of cars in any other situation is 80kph
  • (d) race officials can lower the pit speed limit to 80kph or close the pit lane entirely due to safety incidents)

This works a bit better but brings another challenge: When multiple cars are in the pit lane, such as during a safety car, and multiple are exiting at the same time, the first one gets to drive at 160kph while the others have to wait until it crosses the pit exit line, then the second gets to go 160, then the third... might seem a bit unfair. It's the reward of deciding first to enter the pit lane, but it's also affected by the choice of pit box location. I'm not sure I can simulate all the scenarios in my head, but it doesn't seem too unfair to me at the moment. There is a rule I have in mind which could make it even more fair, but I'm not 100% sure it doesn't have any other unintended consequences:

APSL v2.1:

  • a) Whenever a car is alone in the pit lane, it's pit speed limit is 160kph.
  • b) Whenever a car is exiting the pit lane (in the fast lane past it's pit box), and no cars are ahead of it, it's speed limit is 160kph
  • c) Whenever a car is exiting the pit lane (in the fast lane past it's pit box), and all cars ahead of it have a speed limit of 160kph, it's speed limit is also 160kph
  • d) The pit speed limit of cars in any other situation is 80kph
  • (e) race officials can lower the pit speed limit to 80kph or close the pit lane entirely due to safety incidents)

This new point c) would have all the cars exiting at 160kph, but it may bring issues I'm not aware of, and may make pitting with multiple cars a little too unsafe as well.

Potential benefits:

And what's the actual benefit of introducing this rule? Well let's do the math:

This rule only affects the cars between the pit entry and pit exit lines. From my crude measurements they seem to be between ~330 and 400m. At 80kph (or 22.222 m/s), the cars would cover this distance (sans the actual pit stop) in anywhere from 16 to 19 seconds. In reality, the aren't driving the entire length of the pit lane at 80kph because they have to slow down for the actual stop, and then accelerate again. I'd estimate that's about one tenth of the pit lane length - about the size of the teams pit box. That means they'll spend about 15 to 17 seconds at that speed. By doubling it, we can shave somewhere around 7.5 to 8.5 seconds off of that.

What does this mean? Right now, to justify a pit stop, teams need to be sure the new tires are going to make up the pit time and the time lost overtaking cars the pit stop puts them behind. Shortening the pit stop helps with both - you don't fall behind as many cars as with a longer pit stop, and you need to make up less time on the new tire. Plus with a two stop, the stints are shorter so you don't have to save tires as much (in theory at least).

The second benefit is in forcing teams to run different strategies. You don't want to end up in the pit lane with another car, that slows both of you down, so you can't run the exact same strategy, you'd have to be at least one lap off. It kills double stacking (unless you have the first pit box in the pit lane and APSL v2.1 is in use), which I don't think is great but it's not a very high price given how rarely it happens.

It also reduces the benefit of the "cheap" pit stop behind VSC - if more than one car choose to do it. It bothers me how much a SC or VSC affects a race. Right now, normal pit stop is ~21-26s lost while VSC is about 14s lost. If multiple cars do the VSC pit stop, it's still 14s lost, (otherwise it's about 6-7s) while the regular pit stop is now only ~13-18s when alone. This is trickier for the 'free' SC pit stop, but still it could become less 'free', or at least less of a disadvantage for cars which do not pit under SC.

In summary:

  • Faster pit stop
    • new tire does not have to be as good to outweigh the time lost
    • less overtaking required after pit stop
  • Forced differing strategies
  • -> more potential for 2- or more-stop races
  • VSC pit stop doesn't mess with the racing as much

Potential drawbacks:

It does bring in quite a bit of complication to the pit procedure. This increases potential for from the teams as well as race officials, and further complicates the penalty procedure in case someone breaches this rule in various ways. (Also what does a drive through penalty look like under this rule?). However I don't believe safety is compromised in any significant way.

In summary:

  • Double stacking seriously disadvantaged
  • More complex pit procedure
    • increased potential for screw-ups
    • unclear penalties for breach
  • More complex communication equipment required
    • what happens when it breaks?

P. S. And with pit box placement potentially becoming more important, stay tuned for /r/formula1 crazy ideas part 2: The race for pit boxes.

P. P. S. If you've made it this far you deserve a reward

About me:

I'm not a hardcore, long-time fan - used to watch as a kid when Schumi was racing, and got back into it seriously about a season and half ago. So feel free to tear it apart on aspects I haven't thought of. This is a culmination of about a month of Showerthoughts bouncing around in my head, and I'm still not entirely convinced it would work...

A child's opinion on the creation of the Mercedes F1 team in 2010 2019-02-11 11:52:57

Since we're all waiting for today's car launches and we're bored, here's a little thing I just remembered.

When I was a child, I started watching F1 in 2004. McLaren-Mercedes was always a successful team in the following years, and it always had silver cars. For me, McLaren-Mercedes was one word. You could not say McLaren without saying Mercedes. I thought that McLaren has always been the works team for Mercedes and since I was just a kid and therefore a very casual fan, I did not do any further research.

Well, in 2010 the Mercedes F1 team appeared. I did not follow any press of course. As a kid, I knew exactly what happened. The whole thing was just a PR stunt in my eyes. McLaren-Mercedes wanted to expand its advertisement reach, so they created a second team. They wanted one team to be popular with German audiences and the other one with British audiences, so they created the very German Mercedes team with two German drivers, Rosberg and Schumi, and the very British McLaren team with two British drivers, Button and Hamilton. Both teams even still had silver cars.

This explanation made perfect sense to me, so I took it as a fact. I didn't really like this blatant PR stunt and I stopped rooting for McLaren that year. (I still have a cool Vodafone McLaren backpack from 2007 that I put dirty sports clothes in sometimes)

I didn't really follow F1 during the Red Bull years. Now that I started wathing again as an adult in 2017 (and have kind of become a hardcore fan through Reddit), I look back at the reason why I stopped liking McLaren as a child and just marvel at how absurd the whole situation is. I made up a completely fake story in my mind and then used that as a basis for my decision making. This is what's wrong with us humans. We trust ourselves too much.

Anyways, hope I could waste a few minutes of your time and get you slightly closer to that launch time of the TR/Williams today.

Difference between livery and car reveal ? 2019-02-11 10:50:33

Hi, As a new formula 1 fan, it’s my first winterbreak or preseason, and I read some people typing, it’s just « livery reveal not car ». Wanted to know what’s the difference? And why do 2 reveals if it’s only one who will be on the grid ? Thank you for your answers.

Going down a somewhat deep rabbit hole on British F1 drivers and if they received a CBE, OBE, or MBE's... noticed that Allan McNish has never been part of the Queen's list.

Now, I'm not an expert on the Queen's list and how merit works but should he be named under any Order?

Competitiveness in F1 2019-02-11 04:48:25

Just had a bit of a shower thought...(am baked), but I was wondering wether people would be suspect if a team like Renault or Alfa-Romeo jumped right up ahead of the big 3.

Then that got me thinking about team budgets... and I thought it was strange that the amount of money these teams drop into the sport.

Surely all the big teams have engineers of similar quality...

What I mean is... Isn't a budget of $50 000 000 going to achieve the same or possibly better at $100 000 000. Law of diminishing returns and all that?

What haven't they figured out after $50 000 000 that another $50 000 000 is going to tell them?
